It took the Studio's 21 years to finally poke their heads back out. Yes, the film stuck to the franchises underlying principles but boy did it under deliver. Stay away!

RoboCop (2014): A Modern Reimagining

Decades later, in 2014, a new generation of viewers was introduced to "RoboCop" through a reboot of the franchise. Starring Joel Kinnaman as the titular character, with Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton, this version sought to update the story with contemporary issues and modern visual effects. As a standalone movie, without the pedigree from the 80s this film could have passed for decent. I had high hopes with the likes of Oldman and Keaton joining the cast... just lacks the grittiness of '87, the SFX made everything too smooth, too sharp and the dialogue needed more depth. If Blade Runner can produce a sequel of such magnitude and class then surely we can get a great remake of RoboCop?

The cyberpunk action franchise RoboCop, which has been largely dormant since a 2014 , has been targeted to be adapted for both TV and film. A TV series is farther along in development, and would likely be released first. I'm holding thumbs Amazon doesn't butcher this further!

So Did it Stand the Test of Time?

Now, the question arises (and the sole purpose of this article): Did 1987's RoboCop truly stand the test of time? Despite being over three decades old, the film's core elements remain relevant and engaging. My internal debate remains however - as someone who grew up in the 80's, RoboCop had significant meaning, a new and fresh idea, the amazement of possible technology - Is the benchmark for success measured through my eyes or a younger audience?
